Message from the Director:

Thank you to everyone for another great month. I am feeling more settled now and hope that I have gotten a chance to chat briefly with each of you. October has come and gone and soon we will see the snow flying. As the weather continues to get wet and cold, please remember to bring appropriate clothing including hats, mitts, warm coats, rain boots (for the water and mud) and many changes of clothes. We do go outside rain or shine so we need to ensure the children are appropriately dressed to explore. Should any of you need me for any reason, I am generally in the office on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 6:30am-2:30pm and Tuesday and Thursdays from 9:30 am-5:30 pm. Those hours could change in the new year, but are quite consistent for right now. I look forward to a successful November!

Programming:

The month of October brought out a lot of fall and Halloween art from the children of every age. Many (if not all) of the classrooms had pumpkins/jack-o-lanterns, pumpkin /spider artwork. The children were able to really put their creative skills to work this month. There were also some turkeys made with feet and hands in the infant and toddler rooms in celebration of Thanksgiving. In addition, the children explored a hay-stuffed scarecrow outside and enjoy the texture of some straw utilizing it in many different ways.  On Friday, October 31st, children had fun dressing in costumes to celebrate Halloween.

Children also had time to enjoy learning about frogs on one of their nature walks.

Starting in November, preschool 1 teachers will be implementing an additional  small group opportunity each morning for the older preschool children that will have a school readiness component. This will not be a sit-down structured atmosphere, but rather an opportunity for children to practice their independent skills, increase their ability to focus on tasks longer as well as a chance to be exposed to more in depth material.

Staff:

We have Jessica Croft returning on November 24th, 2014. She will be returning to the infant room and taking over from Nadia. While Nadia will not be leaving us, she may not be around each day. I would like to thank her for her hard work and dedication to this daycare during the year Jessica has been off.

There are a group of staff participating in a professional development workshop called “Taking the challenge out of behaviour” on November 22nd and one staff took part in “Cooking with kids” on November 1st.

Fundraisers:

I would like to thank all the participants from our walk-a-thon. It was a fun day with a bar-b-que and facepainting after the walk as well as some train rides. Fundraising is a lot of work and I want to make sure that all the parents and staff know how much their involvement is appreciated. Our next fundraiser is the Quickie Dough Campaign; the information has already been sent out with an asking return date of November 14th to ensure on time delivery prior to Christmas. I would also like to thank Allison who helped with our facepainting on Halloween.

In the Community:

Windsor Daycare Centre is becoming more active in our community. We are participating in the community group window decorating contest (lit up on Nov. 28) and will have a float in the Parade of Lights on Friday, Nov. 28, 2014. Please meet at Fort Edward Plaza for 6pm to enjoy a tree lighting prior to the parade. We hope to see you there! The community group window decorating contest is based on votes, so please make sure you vote for us! Please visit the Town of Windsor’s website for further information.

Just a few reminders and housekeeping items:

Please be mindful of the no parking sign at the edge of our parking lot. We ask that you not park there as it is our wheelchair access parking. In addition, please be aware of the marked posts around the driveway as winter is coming. There are large rocks and tires in those areas that could damage your vehicle, so please be careful.

In addition, just a reminder that the daycare property is a no smoking area. Please refrain from smoking on the daycare premises including in your vehicle in the driveway.

A reminder of fee payments being due at the beginning of each month. Anyone wishing to have a more convenient payment method can use e-transfers as we do accept those. Credit card processing will be available for December for those preferring to pay by visa. There is a 2.75% fee for each swipe. We thank you in advance for prompt payments.

We are looking for more parents to be involved with our parent committee, so if you are interested, please let Amie know. We meet twice/year and it’s a great opportunity to discuss concerns from a parental point of view. We now have a parent board up in the lobby. This is intended to be a communication tool; keeping all parents informed of things that are going on in the centre or simply for information purposes.

In the near future, please look out for a parent survey for feedback on the centre over the last year as well as an emergency contact form to ensure we have the most up-to-date contact information for emergency purposes.
